NEXRAD & RADAR DATA PRODUCTS

Processed NEXRAD imagery showing heavy bird migration from Cuba to the Florida (24 hour loop)DeTect staff have been designing, developing and operating systems using data from the U.S. National Weather Service network of NEXt generation RADars weather radars (WSR-88D or NEXRAD) since 1998 having developing the first operable network for detection and tracking of bird movements in near-real time for the US, Alaska, Hawaii and Guam. DeTect currently is the developer, host and operator of the largest, most comprehensive NEXRAD bird detection and tracking radar system in the world - the US Air Force (USAF)/Air National Guard (ANG) Avian Hazard Advisory System (AHAS, see www.usahas.com).

DeTect is also a principal member of the Engineering Research Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA), a National Science Foundation-funded partnership that includes major universities such as the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Oklahoma, and Colorado State University and private industry partners.

Automated NEXRAD data processing center in DeTect's Panama City facilityDeTect's NEXRAD services & capabilities include:

  • NEXRAD data processing & algorithm development
  • Network design, hosting & operation
  • Database management
  • Data processing & delivery
  • Coverage modeling & analysis
  • Custom programming

bulletRadar Data Delivery & Analysis :

Avian Hazard Advisory System Home Web page DeTect provides a full range of radar data products, analysis and data delivery services for radar information, that includes automated, real-time processing, historical data analysis and development and operation of on-line information web sites. DeTect maintains the largest database in the world on bird and bat activity that includes over five years of bird density and migratory data for the continental United States. This dataset can be used to model historical bird activity at project sites with avian issues (airports, wind farms, landfills, mines) as well as support migratory research for birds and bats. The company maintains a dedicated data processing lab in Panama City, Florida USA that includes full SQl data processing servers.

Radar data capabilities include:

  • Web-based radar data delivery systems
  • Data sales
  • Database mining & queries
  • SQL database processing
  • Custom programming
  • Query development
  • Statistical analysis
  • Data Quality Aassurance/Quality Control

REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS...

Google 3-dimensional real-time on-line AHAS data product for military flight bird strike risk management

USAF/ANG Avian Hazard Advisory System - DeTect staff developed and DeTect and its teaming partner, AET Environmental, currently operate the USAF/ANG AHAS system that provides military flying units with near-real time bird risk ratings for all military training routes, ranges and airfields for the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii and Guam. The highly automated system processes NEXRAD data from 148 radars sites 24-7 and provides the bird-aircraft strike risk via the AHAS website in both table and imagery formats with color-coded risk (green = LOW; yellow = MODERATE; Red = SEVERE) that and user selectable supplemental data layers. See www.usahas.com

Avian Flu interactive website using DeTect's real-time processed NEXRAD bird density data to provide support to US Air National Guard units for outbreak response

U.S. AIr National Guard dBird Avian Flu web portal & response support system- DeTect is supporting MACROSystems, Inc. on the dBird web portal for the ANG to support centralized Avian Flu data management and response for the US. The system will map birds test results for the HPAI virus nationwide and will include enhanced AHAS functionality to support ANG First Response units in identifying and tracking regional bird activity, directional flow and roost site with real-time processed NEXRAD data in the event of an outbreak. See www.dBird.us

Processed NEXRAD Bird Density data image for the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge in Florida USA

Migratory Bird Study of St. Marks & St. Vincents, Florida - DeTect was contracted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct a radar study to assess level of use of the St. Marks and St. Vincents Refuges as wintering habitat and migratory stopover. The study conducted an analysis of current and historical processed NEXRAD data to assess bird activity relative to the refuges and the surrounding areas.
