BASH MANAGEMENT SERVICES & TECHNOLOGIES

Bird strikes to commercial aircraft annually cost more than $2 billion dollars in damage and delay costsBird-aircraft strikes pose a significant hazard to military and and commercial aircraft causing over $2 billion in estimated costs annually worldwide from airframe damage, out-of-service delays, and lost aircraft. Even more important are the more than 400 lives that have been lost in strike related crashes. Over 5,000 strikes are reported annually in the U.S., however the FAA estimates that this represents only about 20% of the strikes that actually occur. The hazard level is increasing due to increased air traffic and increased bird populations as a result of environmental conservation efforts necessitating increased and improved control measures. DeTect offers a full range of professional Bird-Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) consulting and support services to airports, airport planners and consultants:

  • Airfield bird & wildlife risk assessment
  • Bird aircraft strikes cause an estimated $2 billion in damage and airframe loss costs annually and have resulted in over 400 deathsBASH/Wildlife plan development
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Mishap investigation
  • MERLIN avian radar surveys
  • MERLIN aircraft-birdstrike avoidance radar systems
  • Wildlife control program design
  • Bird/wildlife control services
  • BASH management training
  • Expert consulting & testimony

Specific expertise includes short- and long-term avian radar studies for new airports and airport expansions to assess bird and wildlife hazard risk, develop management plans and provide real-time operational bird-aircraft strike risk avoidance with the MERLIN Aircraft Birdstrike Avoidance Radar system. Staff have extensive background and experience in successfully resolving airport-landfill conflicts and in supporting public hearings and legal proceedings.

bullet LRAD-B Advanced Wildlife Control Systems

LRAD-B bird deterrent device with auto-aim gimbal feature integrated with the MERLIN Avian Radar SystemThe dispersal of hazardous bird and wildlife species has long been an important component of any comprehensive wildlife control program.  Common dispersal techniques include pyrotechnics, propane gas cannons, lasers and acoustic systems. Each method offers advantages in terms of effectiveness and costs but all suffer from a lack of range and the potential for habituation.  Additionally, these methods often elicit noise complaints from neighbors.

LRAD - B Long Range Acoustic Device for advanced bird and wildlife control at airports, airfields, landfills, mines and wind farms; the system is dual purpose also supporting site security and force protection applicationsDeTect now offers the Long Range Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) that is capable of projecting a highly focused, controlled beam of noise at extended ranges (up to 3000 ft). DeTect is the authorized application specialist and distributor for the American Technology Corporation for the LRAD systems for bird and wildlife control. The units are military grade systems and can use either recorded distress calls (bioacoustics) or various sounds (such as sirens, bells, etc) at variable levels up to 140 dB to disperse wildlife in a controlled manner at close-in or extended ranges (up to 1000 meters). System options include vehicle and gimbal mounts, and the technology can be integrated with a MERLIN Avian Radar System to provide automated detect and deter functionality. REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS...

DeTect provides full time bird and wildlife control services for the Waste Management Outer Loop Recycling and Disposal Facility in Louisville, Kentucky USA

Bird Control and Avian Radar Monitoring Services, Waste Management Outer Loop RDF, Louisville, Kentucky, USA - DeTect provides full time bird and wildlife management and control services for the landfill located at the runways at the south end of the Louisville airport. The Louisville airport, and the North American base for United Parcel Service, is the fourth largest freight airport in the US. Services include operation and data processing for a MERLIN XS2530i avian radar system to document that bird levels on the landfill do not exceed background and to provide real-time BASH risk alerts to the airport. The bird control and radar monitoring program is overseen by the US FAA and was initiated as a result of concurrent expansion of the airport runways and landfill in 2002..

MERLIN XS2530c Aircraft Birdstrike Avoidance Radar operating at the new La Mercy Airport in Durban, South Africa

BASH Assessment & Avian Radar Survey of New Airport, Durban, South Africa - DeTect is providing a BASH assessment and MERLIN avian radar system survey to address bird-aircraft strike risk issues associated with a roost of over 3 million Barn Swallows near the new Durban International Airport being constructed for the 2010 World Cup. Work includes radar survey of the bird activity and development of a risk assessment and BASH management plan for the airport. Click Here to view a news video on the Barn Swallow issue at the airport and the radar study.

Processed NEXRAD bird density data product developed for monitoring bird activity at the Nashville International Airport, Tennessee USA

BASH Management & Bird Control Services, Nashville IAP, Tennessee, USA - DeTect provides on-going BASH assessment, planning and bird control services to the Nashville International Airport. Services include risk assessment, bird control and habitat management work to relocate an estimated 300,000 wintering birds on the west side of the airport in 2003. In developing the BASH plan for the airport, DeTect conducted a year-long avian radar survey and data analysis to develop information on seasonal and periodic bird activity at the airport and to identify "hot spots".
